In Loving Memory Of All Those We Have Lost

A gentle breeze danced across the Rainbow Fields and lifted Derby's fur as he lay dreaming in the sun. He smiled and turned his whiskers into it. "Morning Derby" said Nicky settling into the shady patch, "whatcha smiling for?"

Derby chuckled and replied "Well I went to the stars to check on the all the fuzzbutts and on momma and daddy."

"Are they are keeping her busy?" Nicky asked grinning, "I bet they are!" He remembered how Zoey and Zach kept his mom jumping.

Cody, snoozing near them gaffawed, "You should see MY humans! They've got ferts everywhere."

Over in the tall grass, Teddy and Eddie were engaged in a game of hide and swipe.

It was, as are all days on the Rainbow Bridge, a quiet and happy one. For as far as the eye could see fuzzbutts were enjoying their daily pursuits, napping in the shade of a tree, playing with friends, snacking on the abundant treats that always seemed to be there or happily lapping from the ferretone streams that never ran dry. Occasionally a dog_dog or a cat or some other creature loved and missed by humans would visit. There are no borders on the Bridge and while each type of creature had it's own fields to roam,  furiendships soon were formed and such visits were always welcomed. Today, Candi the ferret was leading the kits on a merry chase and a couple of cats Cinnamon and Cherie were happily giving rides. "Wheeeeeeee" cried Sassy goes faster!!!!" Cinnamon grinned and waddled along.

Nickie was happily chasing a chirp, he swiped with a paw_paw and accidently brushed a tail feather. The chirp turned and landed in front of him chirping agitatedly "Chrrrpppp, you KNOW the rules!"

"I is weally sorry" said Nickie looking at his paw_paws, "I didn't mean to, weally."

Nickie looked so dejected that the chirp had to laugh. "Well, chrrrp, okay, let's go, but watch the tail feathers, would you?" and with that she flapped her wings and took off with Nickie in merry pursuit.

In the shade, Lilly and Daisy had quietly padded up to lay beside Derby. He looked up into Daisy's wise eyes and caught a glimpse of sadness there. He closed his eyes and bowed his head, recognizing the tingle in his whiskers meant another would be coming. Daisy reached out and gave him a nuzzle, "Yes little one, another will come" and Derby sighed.

It is the Way of All Things" said Daisy in her gentle voice, "all creatures must come here in their own time. My sadness is for those left behind and for the parting. Someday you will understand."

Derby nodded. He did understand a little. This was a good place and there was so much love here, but still the sadness when another ferret had to leave the warmth of their humans. He felt the change in the wind and the now all too familiar tingling in his whiskers. Quietly he stood and with Lilly and Daisy, began to make his way towards the Gate.

The friends rose and began to make their journey to the Gate. Jodi came running up to Squeakie and threw her paws around his neck, "Nos" she sobbed, "Nos, my human is sads..." Squeakie hugged her close and whispered to her, "It will be all right Jodi, I promise." Squeakie gently took Jodi and held her close; his eyes were full of sorrow, whispering comforting words to her, he carried her in his paws to the Gate.

There was a blinding flash and noise exploded all around him. The little ferret felt  himself falling, but not falling. The world seemed to be spinning away and he could not tell if he was going up or down. He twitched his whiskers and swished his tail, but could not get his bearings. He felt so strange; after what seemed like a very long time, the spinning slowed and he came to rest.

Laying low to the ground, he did not move at first and was afraid to open his eyes. Everything was so quiet; there were no dooking sounds, nothing but a very faint sound, like the wind rustling through the leaves. He called out for his sisters and brothers, but no one answered him. He called out for his mom or to anyone but still no answer. He was a brave little ferret, but his courage had deserted him. He curled up in a tight ball and softly began to cry. He did not hear the others approach him and when a strange voice spoke his name, he shot up hissing and tail bottle-brushed. Surrounded by strange ferrets, he hissed at them, "Ifins you touch me, I bite you. I will!"

A silver-mitted jill stepped out of the crowd and took a step towards him. He backed up a step, but she simply sat and smoothed her fur. When her fur was to her satisfaction, she looked directly at him and spoke again, "You must be Webster."

"Who you be and how you knos my name?" Webster demanded to know.

"My name is Maggie, and I, we have come to greet you. I know your name because......" but she did not have a chance to finish.

A dog-dog came running up and before Webster could even get his teeth ready, the dog-dog licked him from nose to tail-tip. Webster sat down and blinked; he really hated it when dog-dogs did that.

The silver-mitt jill named Maggie, rolled her eyes. "Penny, please! He has not been properly welcomed!" The dog-dog sat down and wagged its tail.

"I am sorry" and turning to Webster the large dog burst out, "How are my humans? How is the big man?? How are my girls??"

Webster had never seen such a round dog-dog dance before, but this one was most certainly doing just that. Despite himself, Webster found himself liking the dog. "I be sworry. I not knos yur humans, but I hope dey be okay."

The silver-mitted jill walked slowly up to him and gently licked his face. Webster looked around at the strange ferrets, cats, the dog-dog, and they all looked suddenly sad and he began to be afraid again. Maggie motioned to the others and they quietly moved closer to Webster.

A pretty sable ferret came up to him and offered her nose in greeting. "I am Megan, welcome to the Rainbow Bridge."

A handsome champagne male fert with a nice white bib said, "I am Astoreth, welcome."

A large furry panda fert with the biggest feet Webster had ever seen came next, "I am Aragon, Son of Arrewyn, but our humans called me Wookie, welcome."

One by one, each of the ferrets presented their noses; Ty, Bob, Jake, Fox, and Hobbes. Finally the last of the ferrets approached, a handsome male ferret with round chops leaned forward. "I am called Yogi, welcome to the Rainbow Bridge."

Webster hung his head low, "I no wanted to goes away. I not wants to makes dem sad."

"None of us did" replied Yogi."

Webster gasped, "You alls went away? And now you wants me to go away too! NO!! I wants to go home!" he began to wail. "I would weally wike to go home now pwease" he said.

Dotty smiled sadly at him, "But this is your home now" she said.

"No, I has to go home now. My humans been awfuwwy worried and dey needs me. Today my mommy be crwying..."

Dotty bowed her head, "I know" she said, "Oh Webster your, our mom was crying because you had to come here and live with us now and she knew that she would miss you. They were worried because you were so sick. But you are not sick now and you never will be again."

Webster looked at her as the truth of her words began to sink in. He started to cry, "I wants to go home now pwease, I wants to be wif my brudders and sisturs and my mommy and daddy."

Dotty took him in her arms and rocked him gently, "It will be all right, Webster. You are home now. And I will take very good care of you, I promise you, I will. And all of the fuzzbutts here will be your family now. They'll teach you all the best places to play and all best places to sleep."

"But I wants my mommy and daddy", wailed Webster, "and now I won't ever sees dem again...."

"Oh but you will, Webster, I promise you! That is why we are here. We are all of us waiting for the day our humans will come for us; mom and dads will come for us. I promise."

"Reawwy? Dey not forgets me?" he said lifting his face from her fur.

"Really."

"And Shasta and Willie?"

"Shasta and Willie will come too, when their days on the Earth have passed. Oh, Webster, how could our moms and dads ever forget us? We will be with them always in their hearts and one day we will all be together again."

Webster wiped his eyes with his paw. "I will miss dem a wot."

"I know, but you will have lots of friends here. You can play chase and hockey and there's always plenty of shade and sunshine... streams that never run dry of ferretone" she explained.

As Webster calmed down, the others began to explain how they came to be at the Bridge. Ben came over to Webster and quietly washed his face and laid down close to his new friend. The other ferrets drew closer and joined in. When Webster was calmed down, Ben spoke, "I am sorry Webster that our humans are sad again. We all felt that sorrow and knew that you were coming. All of us lived with and loved our humans, but each in our own time had to leave and come here. I was very sick and our humans did everything they could to keep me, but one day I couldn't hold on any longer and I came here."

The dog-dog barked, "I was sick, too, and the vet told our humans to send me here. But they wouldn't. The big man told the vet that as long as I did not hurt I could stay with them. I tried real hard to stay, but one night I went to sleep and woke up here."

Each ferret, dog, and cat, in turn, told Webster of how they came to the Rainbow Bridge.

Webster began to cry again. "It isn't so bad," said Yogi. "But I not sees mom and dad again or my human fwiends" said Webster and buried his face in Dotty's fur.

"Oh, but you will, little one" she told him. "When it is time for your mom to come, you will be here to greet them. And we will all wait together for our humans and someday we will all be together again."

Webster lifted his head and blinked, "Weally?"

"Really" chuckled Dotty, "would you like to come and meet the others?"

"Odders? How many fewets or odder animals has our humans wived wiff?" Webster wanted to know.

"Not only our humans, we are not the only ones here. All the ferrets, cats, and dogs and other animals ever loved by humans are here waiting. Come on, let's go home."

Webster stood up and looked over his shoulder and felt the sadness creeping over him again. He felt a nudge and looked up into the eyes of the dog-dog Penny. "Oh, don't worry," said Penny, each of us had a very special place in our human's heart that no other animal can fill. That's why we wait here, so we can all be together again and all be whole again. Come on, let's go."

Webster looked at Penny and despite his better fert judgment, decided he really liked this dog-dog. He stood up and followed the others over the Bridge. When they had crossed over to the other side, Webster stopped and gasped. He had never seen so many different animals in all his life. There were ferts, cats, dog-dogs, chirps, slithery things, horses, birds, and mice!

Webster sat and looked around. It was the most beautiful place he had ever seen. The sky was a cloudless blue and everything seemed to glow. There were fields of tall grass to play in (and an active game of hide and swipe was in progress) and plenty of shady spots to go around. Cats and chirps lounged side by side. Some distance away there was a huge gate and off to one side was a much smaller door. "What's dat?" he asked.

"That is the door into Heaven. That's where the humans who cross the Bridge live" answered Megan.

"They not wive wiff us?" asked Webster, growing concerned.

"Oh, yes. The small door is so we can come out and play, and to greet others as they come."

A young fuzzbutt came running up. "Do you play hockey? Do you? Huh? We can always use good hockey players. My name is Josh, you wants to play later?" and then he was off in a single bound.

"Uh, yes, maybe watter...", but Webster realized he was talking to the air and stopped short. They played hockey in Heaven! Webster thought, "Well, my mom and dad will wike it here " and with that thought he felt a sharp pang.

Megan sat down close to Webster again, "It gets easier, my friend. It will take time, but you will soon feel at home here."

Webster decided to investigate his new home. There were so many things to be sniffed. The dog-dog, the cats, and ferrets were never far away. They showed him the best sleepy spots and answered all of his questions. There weren't any rules in Heaven (except that part about not eating each other) and everyone seemed to be happy. He was examining a particularly interesting area that looked like it would be an excellent nap spot when a commotion started around him.

The animals stopped their games and rose from their naps. Webster could sense a change in the sound in the air and his whiskers began to tingle. "What dooes dat mean?"

Dotty turned to him, her eyes were quite sad. "Another ferret is crossing the Bridge. Come let us greet her."

"Why we be going to meets her?" asked Webster, turning to follow the others.

"Because, little one, she has no one to meet her" and Dotty walked in silence the rest of the way.

Webster looked around. All of the animals seemed to share Dotty's intense sorrow. He wondered who this ferret was to cause so much concern.

The Ferret Promise Song was swirling around them, lifting it's voice onto the wind and dancing it's way earthward. The lights in the sky glimmered and shifted,  painting the horizon in the brilliant colors of the   rainbow. The bright blue flash appeared and company waited for it to subside. A sweet-looking female with sable fur sat blinking at the group. The little girl ferret sat there and blinked her eyes. Webster had never seen a fert look so forlorn. Her coat was dirty and unkempt. She was so thin that her ribs showed and some of her fur had fallen out. "Who is she?" Webstere asked.

"A ferret that no human loved" sighed Dotty.

"No one loved her?!" Webster could not imagine that.

The young ferret began to cry and the group of fuzzies gently approached her with reassuring nose touching and licks. "What will happen to her? Will any humans come for her?"

"No", said Dotty, "She was only loved for a very short time while on earth. She was part of a rescue and the only name she ever had was #88 Albino Girl. She lived with a lot of other ferrets that were finally rescued by some nice people. She did get to know love but only for a very short time and now we will care for her, we will be her family."

Webster thought for a moment and ran over to the ferret. "Don't cry. My humans will love you. They will, I know they will, they gots lots of love."

"And mine," said stately chocolate fuzzbutt.

"And mine", said an orange tabby cat, "I was dirty and hungry and they took me in and loved me. I know they will love you too!"

Dozens of ferrets, cats, and dogs reassured the frightened little girl ferret that she would be loved.  Slowly her fear subsided and she sank to the ground.  Two large males picked her up and carried her over the Bridge.

"Don't worry Webster, she will be cared for" said Ben, "and I know that one of the humans will lover her.

When they had seen to that the new kit had been tended to, washed, and fed, the animals slowly returned to their games and naps.  Webster continued to explore and also having to defend his tail once from a very young kitten.  Coming around a tree the ferret found himself nose-to-nose with a strange dog-dog but otherwise his day passed without incident.  He began to feel more comfortable with his new home.  He spoke to several ferts and promised to join in a game of hide and swipe later. He bumped into Josh (who was still bounding around looking for hockey players) and promised to play with him too.

Late in the afternoon, when she was certain that Webster was going to be all right, Penny excused herself, saying that her friend the rabbit had consented to be chased and that she would see Webster later. Dotty had settled down to a good bath and was intent on cleaning her toes and the other ferts had found nice patches of shade to lounge in.

As the ferrets led by Yogi took Webster into the Rainbow Fields, Webster waddled along lost in his own thoughts. So lost in thought was he that he didn't notice the others dispersing. He looked up and found himself sitting alone with Yogi. Yogi blinked his large, expressive eyes at Webster and he felt his nose leather getting hot again. "Excuse me, Yogi" he said, "another fuzzbutt said I should ask you about the Promise. Is it true? Will I see my human again? I already miss them", his eyes misted at the thought of his mom and dad.

"Yes, follow me to the Bridge, we have someone very important coming and then you will understand the Great Promise."

When they arrived at the Gate, the ferrets all formed a circle within the circle of the Company and they closed their eyes and lifted their whiskers into the wind. The Ferret Promise Song swelled, with a heartbreakingly beautiful refrain, around them. The Company raised their voices and sang of love and warmth to welcome the one coming. Squeakie raised his eyes and saw a shimmering shape form before the Gate. The Creator, her rainbow white fur glistening in the sunlight, stood ready to welcome her child home. Her crystal blue eyes held a wisdom and sorrow that  took Squeakie's breath away. As the sound danced upon the wind, a new voice joined it's haunting chorus, a voice clearer and sweeter than all the others. Her voice promised loved and joy. Squeakie felt her words washing over him, "Come home, all my little loves, come home" and a tear rolled down his cheek. The Creator stood before the  Company of animals gathered together to hear her message and to be given an understanding of the order of things and why they were at the Rainbow Bridge.

"There is a cycle to life, my children, and we have completed it. We  knew the boundless energy when we were young, the steadiness of adulthood and the quiet slowing of old age; we completed the cycle. Each of us is given a march of days in the sun and when that march is over, we must join our furiends here.

"And, said Cocoa quietly, "for us coming here meant the end of pain." The ferrets who were once old and sick all nodded gravely. "For many coming here means the end of pain and it is a relief. We will always miss our humans until they come for us again, but we are glad to be here, and whole again."

Lilly smiled and nodded, "And don't forget The Greatest Gift..."

The Creator began to explain, "Life is not always fair, my little ones. It is the way of the world, hard though it is at times. This one could not stay on Earth as she pointed to Ferris, he was too sick. But here he will be whole and healthy. Here he will be loved and cared for until those on Earth who love him are with him again." So it has been since The Creator of All Things set the world in motion and it will be now. "The value of our lives is not measured by the number of days we walked in the sun, but in the love we have shared and by that which we are. This little one's time on Earth was brief, but she has left her scent in the heart of his humans. She was loved and that is all that matters."

"NO!" said Squeakie, "It isn't fair! Why does The Creator do this? It isn't fair. Why can't the fert have more time? Why now? Why??? It....it...." his voice trailed off. "No, it isn't fair, but life is not always fair. Why did your march of days end so soon? Do you think your humans were ready for you to come here?" asked Daisy.

"Don't every forget the Promise my children, it was my gift to you all, that love was immutable and everlasting, a bond so strong that neither time nor distance could ever sever it." It was the heart of the Rainbow Bridge, the Promise, the greatest of gifts of The Creator of All Things, that love would last forever."

Squeakie turned his eyes to the sea of ferrets around him and smiled. This is what brought them together, The Welcoming. They were bound together by The Promise and by love and now they gathered to share both with the one who would come.

Webster wanted to know more about being able to see his mom from the Rainbow Bridge, was it possible that this was also part of The Promise? As he approached Yogi again, "is it true? Will I see my hooman again? I already miss them", his eyes misted at the thought of his mom and dad.

"Oh yes! You will see them again. When it is their time, they will come and one day you will all be together again. It is true, I promise"

"Really?" Webster asked with his eyes lighting up.

"Sure, come on", he said, leading Webster to the edge of the Rainbow. "You can see them from here, but I have a favorite spot. Come on" as they leapt out into the stars.

Webster gasped, "But how.....Why don't we fall?" His eyes were very round.

"Umm, I don't know, but we don't. You can go anywhere, even back to Earth to visit sometimes" Yogi told him.

Here we are!" Still holding Webster's paw they landed gently on the moon. Webster looked down on the Earth and sighed.

"You have to see them with your heart" said Yogi, "just look at the Earth and think real hard and soon you will see them in your mind."

Webster did just that and let out a gasp, "There she is! Oh, Yogi she's crying! Momma, Momma don't cry. I'm here."

Yogi gently nuzzled his ear, "She can't hear you."

Webster turned to face him, the tears welling in his eyes, "Can't I make her feel better? I used to make her feel better all the time. Oh, Yogi!"

"She's sad now because you had to leave her. That's why she can't hear you. But the sadness will pass, I promise and then sometimes you can make her hear you" Yogi explained to him.

"But how?" asked Webster.

"Well, you have to close your eyes in concentration and think about them really hard, like this, Yogi closed his eyes and began to concentrate. He held Webster's paw and he felt him turn his thoughts to his humans and he felt him turn his thoughts to Earth.

Then the most amazing thing happened. Webster saw his mommy smile for no reason.

Yogi opened his eyes and looked at him. "See? When you send your love to them they remember you and they are happy."

"Can I try? Maybe I can reach Momma. I don't want her to be so sad." said Webster turning to look back at the Earth.

Sure." Yogi held Webster's paw tight and they closed their eyes and together they concentrated really hard. He concentrated so hard that he rocked back and forth and then he turned his thoughts toward Earth. He reached out and touched his momma and thought "Mama? Mama, can you hear me? I am home, mama and I am whole and I am healthy. Thank you for everything. Thank you for the warm nights and love-filled days. Thank you for comfort...and thank you for letting me go. I love you and I will wait. And mama? It was time. "I love you and please don't be sad." Webster then saw it in his mind, his human looked up and smile and he felt her love wash over him. "I'm here momma and I'm waiting for you."

As they made their way back to the Bridge, Webster looked over at Yogi. "Can we come back? Can I see my momma again?"

"Of course", said Yog. "You can come back whenever you want to. I come here a lot. You can come with me if you want."

Webster smiled at him and then turned his face towards the Rainbow. He knew he would be back and often. He closed his eyes and concentrated once again and felt the touch of his human's love.

Webster walked back to the end of the Bridge and looked over. It wasn't so bad after all. He would miss his humans and his siblings; but he knew he would see  them again. He found a patch of shade to lay down in and put his chin on his paw and sighed. He hoped his mamma would remember to bring his toys and favorite treats when she came to join him.
